Effective Ways to Relieve Dry Eyes During Winter

The frigid temperatures of winter can increase your risk of developing dry eye syndrome, a condition that makes your eyes feel itchy, watery and irritated. Read on as Downtown Eyes shares some ways to manage this problem.

Drink Lots of Water

Staying hydrated is the single most important thing you can do to keep your eyes lubricated. This helps maintain your visual comfort and clarity even during the cold winter months.

Eat Cold-Water Fish

Tuna, salmon and mackerel are rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids, which help keep your tear glands in great shape, preventing dry eyes. Eating these cold-water fish regularly reduces eye inflammation as well.

Blink and Rest Your Eyes Regularly

Try to limit the amount of time you spend on your smart phone, tablet, laptop and other digital devices. Extended use of electronic gadgets can contribute to dry eyes. Your eye doctor reminds you to blink and rest your eyes regularly to prevent this problem.

Apply a Warm Compress

Inflamed, flaky and crusty eyelids may clog your tear ducts, resulting in dry eyes. Applying a warm compress to your eyes for at least a minute may ease the irritation and relieve your discomfort. The dampness and heat help loosen the blockage, allowing better tear outflow.

If these remedies don’t work for you, we advise visiting your trusted eye doctor or optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam. We may prescribe certain medications or procedures to manage this condition.
