Eyeglasses 101: Do’s and Don’ts

Downtown Eyes offers a wide selection of designer eyeglasses to give you sharp vision and excellent style. All our specs are made of extremely durable materials. With proper use and maintenance, you can expect them to provide many years’ worth of performance.

Here are some do’s and don’ts when caring for your glasses:

Do: Wash Your Hands Thoroughly Before Touching Your Glasses

Your hands may contain dirt and microorganisms that could be transferred to your lenses. This is why it’s important to wash your hands before touching your glasses. Use antibacterial or mild, non-cosmetic soaps when doing so. Dry your hands afterward with a lint-free towel.

Do: Clean Your Glasses Thoroughly

Use lukewarm tap water and a few drops of dishwashing liquid to clean your eyeglasses. Use gentle rubbing motions on both sides of your lenses. Your top rated eye doctor explains that this produces mild friction that helps remove debris and dirt. Make sure all parts and corners of your glasses are cleaned.

Don’t: Use Household Cleaning Solvents

Household cleaning solutions may contain chemicals or other harsh substances that could cause damage to your frame material and lens coating.

Don’t: Use Shirt Ends, Paper Towels or Other Materials to Wipe Them

The coarse material of these items may scratch or leave debris on your lenses. Instead, use a lint-free towel or microfiber cloth.

Do: Have Regular Eye Exams

Keep in mind that both eyeglasses and contact lenses are medical devices. This means your optometrist needs to examine your eyes before prescribing you a pair. Regular eye exams can also help us monitor changes in your vision, making it easier to adjust your lens prescription.
